WYN

Day of the Pep Rally

Sean Heller hadn’t always been a star.

In middle school, he had tried out for sports—football, basketball, baseball—but either he didn’t make the cut or he rode the bench.

The fact was, Sean had been chunky most of his young life, and he had gotten bullied in elementary and middle school because of it. It wasn’t until the eighth grade that Sean started laying off the junk food, started running a couple of miles after school every day, and spent extra time in the gym at school.

When freshman year came around, he tried out for football and—to the surprise of many—made the team.

As it turned out, Sean had been practicing all summer, strengthening his throwing arm, and while he didn’t play much that first year, by sophomore year he had become the second-string quarterback, and by junior year he was the starting quarterback and managed to get the team to the state finals, a place Bowden High hadn’t been to in decades. While they hadn’t won the championship that year, his senior year Sean was able to turn them into state champions—as well as setting a national passing record, solidifying Sean Heller’s name in Bowden history and securing him several scholarship opportunities. In the end, Sean had decided to go to Penn State because that was where his dad had gone and Sean loved the team.

Wyn had never had any issues with Sean. In fact, back in middle school, she’d been paired with him during a drama elective, and they had gotten along well. He had been sweet and funny and Wyn had liked talking to him, and Taylor had told her she should hang out with him, like go to the movies or something. But Wyn had said she was too shy, so Taylor had said she would talk to some of Sean’s friends to see if Sean liked Wyn, and Wyn had begged Taylor not to do that, and Taylor, because Taylor was Wyn’s best friend, had given her a wink and said, Sure, okay, if that’s what you really want.

Such was the life of a thirteen-year-old girl.

But because of that experience in middle school, Wyn had always gotten along with Sean, saying hi to him in the hallways if they passed each other, but their friendship never went any further than that.

Until the time came when Taylor started dating Sean, and Taylor—who wasn’t about to ignore all her friends, especially her close friends, just because she was dating a boy—made sure that Wyn was still included in her life, like when groups went to the movies or the bowling alley or even parties at one kid’s house or another.

And Sean was always nice to her, even bringing up how they’d both been in that drama elective back in middle school. Wyn had never gotten the sense he was just putting on a show—she honestly believed Sean was a good guy who had managed to become a star, not one of those guys you hear about
